My thanks to Malcolm Scanes a distant relative from Australia who gave me some of the information on Henry Scanes and Elizabeth Tuck, and the son who went to Australia.


John is the earliest Scanes member so far found in Ide, Devon. He married Mary Leader on 25th March 1772 at Ide, after Banns read on 5th, 12th & 19th. Their marriage was witnessed by Ann Leader.  John and Mary had a least 10 children all baptised at Ide between 1773 and 1793, although three of these are known to have died in infancy.  John baptised 12th January 1773, Jenny baptised 25th June 1775 & Mary baptised 16th July 1775 both names spelt Skeins. Mary baptised 19th October 1777. The parish registers show a burial for Mary Scanes on 30th May 1779. Henry baptised 21st January 1781, Betty baptised 28th December 1783, Thomas baptised 24th February 1786, sadly Thomas died and was buried 2nd July 1788. Another Thomas was baptised 26th January 1789, and he too died and was buried 21st April 1790, William baptised 22nd May 1791, Mary Ann Scanes baptised 22nd September 1793. Mary Ann married Thomas Harris of Christow at Ide on 1st December 1814.

HENRY SCANES 1781 - 1864

Henry was the 5th child of John Scanes and Mary Leader he was baptised 21st January 1781 at Ide. He married Elizabeth Tuck at Ide on 25th September 1806, witnessed by Samuel Tuck.  Henry was a Carpenter and Wheelwright. I'm not sure exactly how many children they had, but here are ones I have found. Samuel Tuck was baptised 7th September 1807, Mary Ann baptised 3rd October 1808,  Henry was baptised 30th July 1810, possibly John baptised 11th April 1813, William was baptised 14th August 1814, Thomas baptised 25th May 1817, he sadly died aged 3, was buried at Ide 23rd January 1820, Robert baptised 22nd August 1819, Elizabeth baptised 8th April 1821, Anna baptised 9th June 1822 who is mentioned on their gravestone in Ide churchyard, she died aged 19 and was buried 11th May 1841, Jane baptised 9th November 1823, who married William Henry Willcox, Emily was baptised 2nd October 1825.

The 1841 census shows Henry and his family living in Ide village, Henry aged 60 a Wheelwright, Elizabeth his wife aged 55, daughter Jane aged 15, daughter Emily aged 15 and Robert aged 20.

The 1851 census shows Henry and Elizabeth living at Smalldridge, Ide. Henry age 70, a retired Wheelwright born at Ide, Elizabeth his wife age 65 born at Southampton, Hampshire, Emily Blakeney, daughter age 26 married, an Accountants wife, born at Ide and John Blakeney, grandson age 3, a scholar born at Ide. The census also showed that their son's Samuel Tuck and John lived close by.

Henry died in March 1864 age 85, his wife Elizabeth died age 83 in July 1869. They are buried at Ide Church.


Samuel Tuck was the first child of Henry Scanes and Elizabeth Tuck, and was born at Ide on 7th September 1807. Samuel Tuck married Mary Ann Wilcocks on 27th May 1832 at St. Mary Steps, Exeter. The couple were witnesses at Mary Ann Scanes wedding at Ide on 5th April 1832. Samuel and Mary Ann settled in Ide, and raised their family. Henry was baptised the 18th of May 1834, John Wilcox was baptised 27th of March 1836, Frances Elizabeth baptised on 21st July 1839.

The 1841 census shows Samuel and his family living in Ide village. Samuel aged 30 a carpenter, his wife Mary aged 30, son Henry aged 9, daughter Frances aged 2 and Henry Wilcox aged 20 a Joiner. Samuel was one of the Enumerators for this census.

Robert was baptised 9th March 1843, Mary Jane born 15th November 1844, baptised at Ide 8th December 1844. and Ellen baptised 22nd August 1847. Samuel was a Carpenter and Wheelwright, he was listed in the 1856 Post Office Directory, Gentry and Traders of Ide, with John Scanes, under wheelwrights, carpenters and blacksmiths. The next entry was John Scanes, pork butcher. Later Samuel changed trade becoming a Builder, as shown on the 1871 census return. Samuel Tuck died on 11th June 1877 age 69 and is buried at Ide, Mary Ann lived for another 11 years and died age 80 on 26th September 1888. Her grandson Frederick Hellier registered her death

MARY JANE SCANES 1844 - 1919

Mary Jane was born 15th November 1844 at Ide. She married Daniel Richard Cruse on 18th January 1869 at St John & St George Parish Church, Exeter. They both gave their address as living at King's Street at the time. The witnesses were Joseph Hellier and Frances Elizabeth Scanes, her sister and future brother in law. Mary Jane and Daniel moved to Crediton where their first child Alfred Henry was born on Wednesday 4th August 1869. The family moved to Tremletts Cottage, Tedburn St Mary, as shown on the 1871 census, Daniel was a Blacksmith and Iron Monger. Their 2nd child Agnes Lily was born Saturday 1st June 1872. The family moved again to Ide Village, and their 3rd child Mary Ellen was born on Saturday 18th July 1874.

Daniel was ill and went to stay with his relatives at Kenton, where he died of Brights Disease on 2nd September 1874, he was only 29 years old. He was buried at Kenton. Mary Jane was left with 2 young children and a 2 month old baby. Her troubles were not over, Mary Ellen became ill the following year, and died age 13 months on 4th September 1875, she was buried with her father at Kenton.

Mary Jane owned a Grocer Shop in Ide Village, and after her father died, her mother Mary Ann came to live with them. The 1881 census shows Mary Jane age 35, her 2 children Alfred age 11 and Agnes age 8 both Scholars, and her mother Mary Ann Scanes age 72 and her sister Ellen Scanes age 32 a School Mistress. Mary Jane continued to run the shop, later with her daughter Agnes. Mary Jane married James Yendell about 1890, he came to live at the shop as the 1891 census shows. James Yendell head, age 55, General Shopkeeper, born at Chumleigh, Mary Jane Yendell, wife, age 46, born at Ide, Agnes Lily Sercombe, step daughter, married, age 18, living with head of family, born Tedburn St Mary.

After the death of James Yendell, Mary Jane continued with the shop with Agnes' help. Agnes' husband died young also, and after this they gave up the shop and Mary Jane travelled with Agnes and her daughters to Bath, where they found work. They lived at no.1 Rose Terrace, Combe Avon, Monkton, where Mary Jane died on 15th February 1919. aged 74 years. There is a story, that they had a cat who always slept on Mary Jane's bed, one day the cat shot of the bed and fled outside, they looked at Mary Jane and realized that she had died, the cat returned about 3 days later.
